Hewlett-Packard's new LaserJet 1100A immediately made our work easier. This nicely designed combination printer/copier/ scanner provides instant gratification with clear, clean output and a quick response to everyday office chores (the copier/scanner unit attaches to the front and is easily removed). Right up front, the 14.5 by 15.8 by 14.9-inch printer churned out our 20-page test document at the advertised 8 pages per minute (ppm), in both the Best Quality and Faster Printing modes. Copying a 1 O-page document produced fine results at 7.5ppm, and scanning a magazine page, although slower, showed good output after we adjusted the contrast to a lighter setting. Printing at 600 dots per inch (dpi) assures solid black text with no noticeable artifacts; output in HP's toner-saving EconoMode is slightly lighter, but very readable. You can also scan at various resolutions (150 by 150, 200 by 200, or 300 by 300dpi) depending on the type of image. With options for watermarks, printing multiple pages per sheet, booklet printing, a Fit-To-Page feature for adjusting document size to paper size, and the ability to reduce or enlarge copies, most office printing requirements are easily met. The paper supply bin, located at the rear of the unit, holds 125 sheets of letter, legal, or executive stock or up to 15 envelopes. Output can be directed to a top-mounted collection bin or, in the case of special media such as cards and transparencies, through the front of the unit. With excellent output for everyday functions, the HP LaserJet 1100A is almost perfect for your monochromatic office needs.
